The foundation of the City of Ternopil related to the name of the Polish castellan Jan Amor Tarnow which, in 1540, received an charter from the Polish King Sigismund I for the town foundation. As a result the Tarnow fortress was built on the banks of the Siret River, in our days the fortress is still on its place (Old Castle). The official date of foundation of the city Ternopil considered to be 1540. Most researchers explain the origin of the name of the city of Ternopil as a derivative from the word "Tarnow" with the Greek ending "polis" which were reduced to "pil", according to the second version, Ternopil name comes from the name of the turn plants, which have long been covered territory of the city. The economy of Ternopil is represented by enterprises of light and food industry, as well as the construction industry. There are 10 higher education institutions in Ternopil, also city has local television and radio broadcasts.
